Podiatric Dermatology

No matter what your foot condition or problem, we can help you get back in the swing of things. Most conditions can be treated in the office, and many can be treated on your first visit to our office. We specialize in podiatric dermatology and can assist you in a variety of foot conditions such as:
  • Athlete's Foot
  • Melanoma
  • Ingrown Toenails
  • Corns
  • Bunions

Description of some common Podiatric conditions:

1.) Heel pain / plantar fasciitis: Refers to an inflammation in and around the insertion of plantar fascia (arch) into the heel bone, and may be associated with development of a bone spur on the heel bone. Heel pain is often most prominent with first few steps after getting out of bed in morning, or after extended periods of inactivity (long drive in car), with pain again prominent with initial ambulation;

2.) Bunions: A bunion is the presence of an enlargement of bone (bone deformity) on the inside of the foot at the base of the first toe;

3.) Warts: Plantar warts, are a viral infection of the surface of the skin, usually seen on the plantar aspect (sole) of the foot;

4.) Athlete foot: The dermatologic / skin condition known as athlete foot is a fungal infection of the skin of the foot;

5.) Fungus toenails: Fungus infection of toenails is a very common podiatric condition, caused by a fungus infecting the toenail itself, resulting in a discoloration and / or thickening of the toenail;

6.) Ingrown toenails: An ingrown toenail is caused by the border of the toenail extending into the flesh of the toe, sometimes causing redness and pain, especially while wearing shoes. If left untreated, the toenail growing into the flesh can get infected, and any bacterial infection can be a serious medical condition;

7.) Corns and / or Callous: Thickening of the surface of the skin, usually associated by excess pressure and friction, is called a corn, of a callous;

8.) Diabetes: Diabetes is a medical condition, managed by your primary care physician. As a member of the health care team, the patient must realize, and accept, that Diabetic foot care is a supremely important component of the care of the diabetic patient. Among other things, the diabetic patient must work with health care team to keep blood sugar in a target range, check the feet daily for wounds, be more active, and consider shoes approved by the MEDICARE diabetic shoe program. Dr. Thomas F. Weidner is an approved MEDICARE diabetic shoe provider, working with Dr. Comfort Shoes, and with a qualified supplemental / secondary insurance, the diabetic patient would pay nothing for the diabetic shoes.

9.) Flat foot / high arch foot structure: Flat foot (low arch) / pronated foot structure is an extremely common condition of the feet, sometimes resulting in generalized foot / ankle / lower leg foot pain and soreness and fatigue (primarily at the end of the day), especially as we get older. High arch foot structure is a less common condition of the foot, which can be a painful condition of the feet, due to poor shock absorbing capabilities of the foot, resulting in heel pain and / or " ball " of foot pain. Each of these conditions can / should be treated with prescription orthotics. Orthotics are custom-made devices worn inside shoes / boots, in order to correct the biomechanical imbalance of the foot, and allow the feet to function optimally, without pain. Today, most insurance companies will cover prescription / custom-made orthotics, with a small co-pay (usually the co-pay is less than the amount pain by wasting money with the over the counter foam inserts constantly advertised onTV, by stepping on a measuring device). The technology behind orthotics were essentially developed in the 1970s for athletic endeavors, and sports medicine injury treatment / injury prevention. Today, orthotics are used for every walk of life, including high-heeled shoes, dress flats and pumps, geriatric and pediatric applications, and today, every professional athlete wears orthotics in order to treat and prevent injuries, but to enhance performance.
